Guest Blogger Tracy Chen: My 5 Top Winter Beauty Essentials

Tracy Chen is one of my friends. She is a full time model and also works as a freelance makeup artist. Today, she will be my guest blogger and share her 5 top winter beauty essentials. Hope you enjoy it!

Dearest dearests:

Ever since I can remember, I have been crazy about makeup. But the best cosmetic is great looking skin. Here are my 5 top winter beauty essentials to help me achieve a healthy-looking complexion.

1. Darphin Hydraskin Serum

I have dry and sensitive skin and this serum is a “100% must always have” for me. My skin always gets terribly dry on winter, and this watery gel cream relieves my tight-feeling skin after one application. It absorbs easily and feels lightless on my skin. I layer this serum under my moisturizer. It makes my skin look refreshed and radiant.             $75 at Darphin.com

2. Caudalie Lip Conditioner

First, it doesn’t contain petroleum. Second, it effectively repair and sooth my lip. The only thing I don’t like is its weird vanilla smell and plastic tube. The product description said that “formulated with 99.5% naturally-derived ingredients, this beauty treatment for the lips repairs damaged lips with each application. With anti-oxidant properties, it also delivers nutrition and protection for the lips all day long.” This lip balm works and does what it says. $12 at Caudalie.com

3. Jurlique Lavender Hand Cream

I have been using this hand cream for about 4 years. It is the best hand cream! I believe hands are people’s second face. For protecting the skin on my hands, I apply hand cream every time after washing my hands. This is the only hand cream that keep my hands supple and soft in the winter time. $25 at Jurlique.com

4. REN Moroccan Rose Otto Body Oil

For centuries, oils were the primary beauty product used on the skin. This Moroccan Rose Otto Body Oil contains rose otto essential oil and omega 6 and 7 essential fatty acids soothe and repair skin. It’s moisturizing but not greasy and sinks in quickly. I used it on a patch of eczema skin and it healed it quickly, without causing irritation.              $65 at RENskincare.com

5. Dr. Brandt Blueberry Anti-oxidant Water Booster

This 100% natural, sugar-free, caffeine-free, and calorie-free dietary supplement provides essential anti-oxidants to increase skin’s health. It is amazing that one dropper full is equivalent to 15 cups of decaffeinated green tea. I add one dropper full to one cup of water (about 250 ml) and drink it every morning. It tastes good and approaches skincare from inside-out. It also help me promote my daily water consumption. $39 at DrBrandtSkincare.com

These are the skincare products I’m using now and I love them so much. Using appropriate skincare products is very important to get great skin, but healthy lifestyle is more important than that. I believe a healthy lifestyle leads to healthy skin. Here are some simple tips to follow:

1. Eat plenty of vegetables and fruits.

2. Drink at least 8 glasses of water every day.

3. Avoid alcohol & Stop smoking.

4. Using sun screen before getting sun exposure.

5. Washing your face before bed, no matter how tired you are.

6. Smile often!

Weekly Chic – Random Things

Untitled #4

Marni ball dress, $812
3 1 Phillip Lim crop top, $347
Rachel Comey trapeze coat, $817
Jane Norman high waisted pants, £21
Giuseppe Zanotti wedge bootie, $648
Lanvin leather clutch handbag, £1,599
Erdem cashmere shawl, $401
The Row black sunglasses, $395
L’Artisan Parfumeur Al Oudh, $165

Here are just a few things I’m dreaming about. Last seasons are all about pop colors, but I’m still a lover of dark colors. Nothing but black will ever be “the new black”. The only problem is how to wear the dark colors. Try to mix the classic pieces with contemporary style and avoid too stuffy, then, you are ready to go!

Weekly Favorite – Anna Karina

Anna Karina, as a muse of Jean-Luc Godard, she spent most of her life in France. At 17, she went to Paris.  After becoming a successful fashion model, Coco Chanel helped her changed her name from Hanne Karin to Anna Karina. Jean-Luc Godard first saw Karina in a soap advertisement. After one year, Godard offered her a role in Le Petit Soldat. In 1961, Karina won the Best Actress Award in Berlin Film Festival for her interpretation in the film Woman Is A Woman. Her 1967 song “Roller Girl” was filmed as part of a TV musical comedy Serge Gainsbourg wrote especially for Karina. Nobody can forget her voice and dance in this video.

As a fashion icon also, Karina’s style can be featured as big bang and cat eyes. She gives me another reason to remember the old times.

Marni for H&M Spring 2012 Collection Preview

OMG! H&M had announced collaboration with Marni a few days ago. Before this announcement, everyone thought the next would be Tom Ford. But Marni made me feel more excited about this collaboration. The collection includes womenswear, menswear, jewelry, shoes, bags, and scarves. It will hit H&M stores worldwide and online on March 8, 2012.

Consuelo Castiglioni, creative director of Marni, said that she wanted to create a true Marni wardrobe by revisiting all Marni’s favorite pieces in signature fabrics and prints. Marni, the Italian label has told the world what Marni’s charming is. I love the way that Marni perfectly connected prints with simple silhouette. All Marni pieces look funky and chic. Let’s just enjoy Marni’s Spring 2012 ready-to-wear collection first.

Marni Spring 2012 Ready-to-Wear

For me, Marni means never-ending ladylike shapes and clean lines. Marni and Versace represent two different types of Italian style. For most girls, Marni might be more wearable. Never too sexy, but chic forever. Actually I feel a bit of disappointed about Versace for H&M. I don’t know how to explain my felling. They are just too…VERSACE. But this time, I am so happy that H&M chose Marni – one of my favorite brand.

Consuelo Castiglioni is one of my favorite designers. (Another one is MIUCCIA PRADA of course!) Let’s hear about her rules of men’s style. Here are some of my favorites:

“Shoes define the kind of man you are. They should never be too trendy or showy but lean toward the classic. There are a lot of ugly shoes out there, and they can ruin even the most sophisticated attire.”

“Clothes don’t necessarily render a man sexy—his attitude and his nature do. For me, someone who is not classically handsome but has a lot of charm is more attractive than a really good-looking guy with no personality.”

“My husband’s style is classic, but he’ll occasionally wear a Marni sweater or sneakers with a suit or try a jacket that’s slightly shorter, and it works for him. My son is more daring. The most important thing is to be yourself.

See? If you want to be stylish, the most important thing is to be yourself. It is not only for men, but for everyone. You got the point.

Weekly Chic – Red Lips

Ok…I have to admit I didn’t wear lipstick so much before because I always forgot this last step of makeup. Yesterday, I made a video call with my best friend Jen – a super stylish girl from Hong Kong. We had not seen each other for couple of months. I noticed that she was wearing red lipstick and looked amazing! She didn’t wear too much makeup on her eyes. So the red lip became the focal point on her face. I didn’t want to say that, but the truth was I had noticed the huge difference between bare lips and red lips. Even though women might be the most complicated thing in the world, but she still could be simple sometimes. After applying red lipstick this morning, I felt my energy had come back. I amazed that color actually influenced the aura a lot. A small difference actually could make a big change.

This is one of my favorite pictures of Marilyn Monroe. I know she might look sexier or prettier on other of her pictures, but this one mentioned innocence to me. In addition to No.5 perfume, Chanel “Ruby” lipstick is her favorite. This is not true red lipstick, but if you think the true red might look too vivid to wear in daily life, the reddish-orange is still a good choice.

I didn’t were too much eye shadow when I wore red lipstick. Every woman should know only one focal point on face is enough. Try to match black clothes with red lip. Nature eyes, red lips, black clothes…these might be what make Paris women look so chic.

Nars Kabuki Lip Coffret

Nars Kabuki Brush Set

Nars Kabuki collection is one of my favorites recently. François Nars was inspired by Japanese traditional kabuki makeup to create this artistic collection. The collection looks like an elegant Japanese cuisine. Since I ordered the Kabuki Lip Coffret, I knew I would never use them. How could I ruin this art piece?

Check out this video above which was made by makeup guru Michelle Phan.

Enjoy~Hope you find your perfect red lips!

Weekly Favorite – Miss Bibi

I’m not a girl, not yet a woman, so my only question is how to find the balance between a girl and a woman? Last week, one of my friends sent me some pictures of Miss Bibi Jewelry and I was pretty sure I had found the answer.

Miss Bibi Jewelry

Brigitte Giraudi, the hero behind the brand, created Miss Bibi in 2006 in Paris. This Central Saint Martin’s graduate transforms all miniature everyday life items into fine jewelry pieces. From high-heeled shoes to can openers, Brigitte Giraudi carefully builds her whimsical universal. The designer gets inspiration from children books, games, and toys. I was amazed of these little cute rings, necklaces, and bracelets. Every piece makes me scream I WANT THIS ONE!!

“In the miniature world of childhood, images alone are narrative fairy tales, flatness gains a lifelike third dimension, the mundane living room emerges a jewel encrusted cathedral…”
